Ethiopia produces some of the most complex and exciting coffees in the world. In the Gedeo zone, coffee is typically grown on a very small scale in the garden of the producer, where it is intercropped with other subsistence crops. The red-brown soils in the area have a high iron content which is one of the micronutrients that play an important role in the coffee plant’s functioning. Gedeo, Yirgacheffe has approximately 25,000 local coffee smallholders who bring their cherries to washing stations for processing. The washed coffees of Yirgacheffe have long been prized for their delicate, tea like aromatics and clean citrus flavor.
Recently, producers in the Gedeo region have been reinventing the natural process and the Misty Valley is the prime example of the fruitiness, complexity, and character of these Natural Yirgacheffe coffees.
